Public Provident Fund (PPF)

A long-term savings and investment scheme backed by the Government of India.

PPF was introduced in 1968 to encourage small savings and provide safe returns with tax benefits. You can open a PPF account with your bank for a lock-in period of 15 years, which can be extended in blocks of 5 years.

Investment Limits

Minimum investment is ₹500 per year, and the maximum is ₹1.5 lakhs per year.

Returns & Withdrawals

Interest rate is around 7% per annum. Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th year onwards.

Tax Benefits

PPF enjoys the EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status:

  • The investment is eligible for tax deduction under Section 80C (up to ₹1.5 lakh).
  • Interest earned is fully exempt from tax.
  • Maturity proceeds are fully exempt from tax.
